5 Simple Ways to Support Your Body's Natural Detoxification Processes

If you've been following me for a while, you'll know I'm a big believer in reducing your overall toxic load.

We often focus on reducing what comes into our bodies: switching to filtered water, choosing cleaner skincare, or replacing non-stick cookware. But I think it's just as important to support the body's own natural processes.

Our bodies are incredibly clever. Every single day they're constantly processing and eliminating waste through organs like the liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin and lymphatic system.

We spend so much time trying to reduce our exposure to everyday toxins that we sometimes forget to support the incredible systems our bodies already have.

While I'm not a fan of expensive detox programmes or quick fixes, I do believe we can support the body's natural detoxification processes through simple daily habits.

Here are five practices I've incorporated into my own routine over the last couple of years.

1. Dry Brushing

This is something I only recently introduced in the last year or so, but it has become one of my favourite go-to self-care routines.

I start by gently massaging behind the ears, armpits, groin, behind the knees and the ankles for a few seconds each. Then, using a natural bristle brush, I gently brush my skin using long strokes towards my heart. I usually brush my neck and chest first, then my arms towards my heart, before moving on to my stomach and legs. After dry brushing, it's advisable to have a shower to get rid of any dead skin.

Many people use dry brushing as a way to gently stimulate circulation and support lymphatic movement, while also exfoliating the skin.

Unlike our circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn't have its own pump. It relies on movement, muscle contractions and massage to help keep things flowing.

I love how simple this is but supports the body in a real way.

Jasmine's tip

Start with just two or three minutes a few times a week. There's no need to brush vigorously; gentle is enough.

2. Castor Oil Packs

This one I was introduced to through Instagram, funnily enough, but castor oil packs have been used in traditional wellness practices for generations.

It involves soaking a cloth in castor oil, placing it over the abdomen (many people, like myself, choose the liver area), covering it, and leaving it in place while relaxing. The liver is key in processing toxins within the body, so this is a nice, gentle way to support its processes.

It's important to buy high-quality castor oil: hexane-free, organic and in a dark bottle. I tend to buy the brand Fushi.

When starting out, you can do 15 to 30 minutes whilst relaxing of an evening. I like to do mine over my liver and sleep with the pack on.

Jasmine's tip

Think of it as dedicated time to slow down: read a book, listen to a podcast, or whatever helps you relax and unwind.

3. Simple Ways to Support Your Lymphatic System

As I mentioned earlier, unlike your heart, which pumps blood around your body, your lymphatic system relies on movement.

That's why simple daily habits can make such a difference.

I only started practising breathwork a few months ago, and I've been surprised by how much I've enjoyed it. My favourite technique is box breathing.

Box breathing simply means inhaling for four seconds, holding for four, exhaling for four and holding again for four, before repeating.

My nine-year-old daughter and I do this together before bed a few times a week, and we've both found it incredibly calming. We listen to a guided breathing exercise that's part of a detox programme I'm currently working through, but there are also some brilliant guided videos on YouTube you can take a look at.

Some of my other favourite practices include:

One of the best wellness treatments I've ever tried was a Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage. I walked out feeling lighter, less puffy and incredibly refreshed. I actually shared my first Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage experience over on Instagram, if you'd like to see what it's like before booking one yourself.

The important thing is simply to keep moving.

4. Support Your Liver Naturally

Your liver works around the clock, carrying out hundreds of vital functions every single day.

Rather than relying on dramatic detoxes, I prefer focusing on supporting it with a nutrient-rich diet and herbs that have a long history of traditional use.

One herb I personally use is milk thistle, which has been used for centuries in herbal traditions. It's not the nicest-tasting herb, if I'm honest, so if you try it and can't stand it, other popular herbs include:

As with any supplement, it's worth checking with your healthcare professional if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or have an underlying health condition.

Remember, herbs are there to complement a healthy lifestyle, not replace one.

5. Move Your Body Every Day

Movement is one of the simplest ways to support your body's natural detoxification processes.

Whether it's walking, stretching, rebounding or strength training, regular movement is one of the simplest ways to support your overall health.

Personally, I love combining movement with fresh air whenever possible. A walk outdoors not only gets my body moving but also gives me a mental reset at the same time.

The important thing isn't what you choose. It's simply finding a way to move your body that you genuinely enjoy and can stick with.

Don't forget the basics

Before we get caught up in herbs and wellness gadgets, it's worth remembering that some of the most powerful things we can do are completely free.

These are the foundations. Everything else simply builds on them.

My Biggest Lesson

If there's one thing I've learnt over the past thirteen years, it's this:

You definitely don't need to feel guilty if you aren't doing everything perfectly.

Supporting your body's natural processes is about the little things you do consistently:

Those everyday habits are the foundation. Everything else is simply there to support them.

Over to You

I'd love to know: have you tried any of these practices? Or is there another wellness habit that's become part of your routine?
